Cellulite is a condition where the skin has a dimpled appearance, and it's a result of the fat calls pressing up against the vertical connective tissue beneath the epidermis. It usually appears in the hips, stomach, buttocks, and thighs. According to Dendy Engelman, M.D., a cosmetic dermatologist in New York City, 93% of women have cellulite, so you aren't alone if you notice it on your body. Other experts estimate that 80% to 98% of women have cellulite.

What causes cellulite?

There are a number of things that can lead to the development of cellulite. Factors that can bring on cellulite include:

  • Poor diet

  • Fad dieting

  • Slow metabolism

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Hormone changes

  • Dehydration

  • Total body fat

  • Thickness and color of skin

According to WebMD, cellulite shows up less on darker skin. There are many ways you can help diminish the appearance of cellulite.

BodyFX by INMODE

BodyFX is the first and only noninvasive body contouring technology proven in peer reviewed and published human studies to both permanently kill adipose tissue and contract the skin. BodyFX addresses problematic fatty tissue in larger body areas such as the abdomen, back (flanks), and thighs. BodyFX works by using different clinically proven modalities including radio-frequency energy and negative pressure applied to the skin and underlying fat.

Laser Skin Treatments

Laser skin treatments, also known as radio frequency systems, work very well when it comes to treating cellulite. Laser skin and body treatments for cellulite can liquefy fat, cut connective tissue to loosen puckering, and boost collagen growth. Laser skin treatments for cellulite also tighten the skin, increase blood flow, and lessen fluid retention. Results may vary.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is usually used to help with muscle tension, but it also works to increase blood flow and reduce fluid buildup too. The theory is that deep tissue massage will break up the connective tissue that causes dimples. Most studies show that massage techniques make your skin look better for at least a short amount of time.

If you notice cellulite on your body, know that you aren't the only one. You visit a medical spa to get treatment and then make sure to eat healthily and exercise regularly to prevent the cellulite from coming back.
